Business performance management (BPM) is a strategic-level initiative, normally focused on one or more of the following activities: budgeting, planning, forecasting, reporting, process control and system controls. CFO.com also defines it as a "set of processes, metrics, methodologies, and software tools that allow an organization to forecast, measure, and react to various business drivers and performance indicators - all in service of its overall business strategy." Many BPM initiatives begin with a process focus (see Business Process Optimization), then move to looking at the data and information needed to manage those processes (see Business Activity Monitoring). Finally software is selected to support the effort and automate information management tasks (see BPM Solution Management).
